What Causes Knee Pain?
Injury to the knee cartilage does not have to occur in a traumatic fashion. It can begin with a minor childhood injury which, over years, can lead to vulnerability in the tissue which allows diseases such as osteoarthritis a?ect the joint. Obesity can also damage knee cartilage. With the rapidly rising rates of chronic obesity among both adults children, there has been a simultaneous rise and child in knee pain. This is not a coincidence. The side e?ect of this obesity is an increase in sedentary lifestyles and this too can cause the knee cartilage to deteriorate. The old adage of “use it or lose it,” comes to mind. It’s important to remember that the cartilage is not damaged by moderate physical activity such as jogging, walking or swimming. Even getting older does not necessarily lead to cartilage damage. Over-exertion such as sprinting, jumping or other trauma to the knee can cause damage that can lead to chronic knee pain.
