The name of the town has its origin in the Celtic dominion of the Iberian Peninsula. It derives from the Celtic world are-valón that according to an- cient authors means “besides the wall or the barrier”. Other interpretations lead to the meaning of “being between rivers” or a derivation of arevaccei that design the vacceos that live in the farthest extreme of their territory. The first written testimony of the name appears in the 11th century in the Latin form Arevalorum. The city of Arévalo is situated in the north of the Province of Ávila in the In- dependent Community of Castilla y León. It is part of the lands of Arévalo, at 827 meters of altitude, between the rivers of Aldaja and the Arevalillo affluent that flow into the Duero River. The extension of the municipality occupies a total of 46.07 km2. The region where Arévalo is situated is known for its agricultural production of unirrigated cereals linked to legu- minous and the abundance of Galician pine and winter pasture. Across the municipality two important motorways run: the A-6, the Northwestern highway that links Madrid to La Coruña and connects the locality with the principal cities of the northwester peninsula, and the autonomic highway CL-605 that links Segovia with Zamora. The Madrid-Hendaya railroad has a stop in this town. From this line, the city communicates thanks to its multiple regional trains with cities like Madrid, Ávila, Medina del Campo, Valladolid, Burgos, Palencia, Vitoria and Santander. 24 Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO 02.Arévalo
