SPOTLIGHT TWO The second job phenomenon For the second straight year, we’ve observed a group of graduates (21%) who are employed full- time, but also hold a second job. As with last year, the nature of these second jobs is not predominantly menial after-hours positions to help pay the bills, such as rideshare driver, cashier, or bartender. More often, these second jobs enhance our graduates’ professional experience–including school counselor, freelance writer, and marketing consultant. Nearly a third of these second jobs are entrepreneurial in spirit and advance our graduates’ career goals. We’re also seeing alumni pursue volunteer positions that align with their values and build leadership skills. For example, in addition to his full-time role as Chapter Financial Support Analyst at the Sierra Club, College Track Oakland alumnae Jarvis also serves on the Board of Directors of the Urban Financial Service Coalition. As our alumni network grows, College Track will continue to roll out resources that connect our alumni to career opportunities and entrepreneurial ventures. “After earning my degree, I dabbled in various sectors within the financial services industry, which led me to my current position as a Financial Analyst for the Sierra Club. While the bulk of the organization spends their time on environmental justice and climate change, I keep the wheels turning by coordinating our finances to assure that we have the funding to achieve our goals. In addition to this full-time role, I am also donating my time to serve as Treasurer at the Urban Financial Service Coalition’s Bay Area chapter. The Coalition is a 100% volunteer-based group of minority professionals in the financial services industry and related fields, who want to ensure the full and equitable participation of people of color at all levels in the financial services industry. The position I do both within and outside the parameters of my work at the Sierra Club allows me to grow and learn within the finance industry, while also offering my experience and expertise to the next generation of leaders from my community.” -Jarvis, College Track Oakland, B.A., Clark Atlanta University 2014 College Track 13
