ISSN 2370-5965 | Winter 2024 Transition Council preparing for consultation on regulatory concepts
The Veterinary Professionals Act ( VPA ) ushers in a new era of regulation with the ‘ one profession , two professionals ’ model . Since September , the Transition Council has been working on proposing necessary regulations to support the new framework .
The Transition Council is reviewing draft regulatory concepts . Once approved for broader review , the proposed regulatory concepts will be shared for a public consultation , expected in February .
The Transition Council will be seeking input on regulatory concepts that have the greatest impact on the practice of veterinary medicine and public protection . These include the regulatory concepts related to licensure and the authorized activities model that support the ‘ one profession , two professionals ’ model and empower team-based veterinarian medicine .
Included under the authorized activities model are regulatory concepts related to delegable activities , orders and initiation for licensed members of the College of Veterinary Professionals of Ontario ( CVPO ) and regulatory exemptions for non-veterinary care providers . Licensure for all members , including veterinary technicians , requires regulatory concepts related to professional misconduct , quality assurance and conflict of interest .
As well , quality team-based care calls for regulatory concepts related to the veterinarian-client-patient relationship , informed client consent , after hours care , and drugs . The proposed regulatory concepts facilitate teambased care and improve accountability .
Following the consultation , the Transition Council will review feedback before finalizing the regulatory concepts to present to the ministry .
