SEEKING YOUR THOUGHTS ON TELEMEDICINE
Telemedicine is an area of veterinary medicine that continues to evolve rapidly . The College is currently in the midst of the annual review of the standard which was initially published in 2015 . In reviewing the evolution of telemedicine in veterinary medicine , several considerations emerged as pertinent in revising the standard , including :
• emphasis on the need to engage professional judgment each time telemedicine is contemplated ;
• whether a veterinarian-client-patient relationship ( VCPR ) can be established
College Staff
through telemedicine ;
• whether the requirements for record keeping and accreditation should be explicitly referenced in the standard ; and
• if the standard should provide guidance on information that needs to be provided to clients when practising via telemedicine .
Council approved the revised standard for consultation to begin in January .
Proposed changes to the draft updated telemedicine standard include an understanding that a VCPR can be
established through telemedicine as it is inperson . However , drugs cannot be prescribed when practising soley via telemedicine . As well , it is noted that telemedicine is to be practised from an accredited facility and the client needs to be made aware of the veterinarian ’ s location , licensure status and the privacy and security issues involved in accessing care via telemedicine .
The proposed telemedicine standard will be open for consultation in January at :
