RESOURCES AVAILABLE ON ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP
Antimicrobial resistance( AMR) has been called the global health crisis of our time.
The responsible use of antimicrobials is critical to maintaining our ability to treat illnesses in the future. Health Canada is working with provincial, national and international partners to address the challenges of AMR.
Several Medically Important Antimicrobials( MIAs) will be moved to the Prescription Drug List as of December 1, 2018. Some MIAs that were once available over the counter will only be available by prescription.
Licensed veterinarians have a greater role than ever before in overseeing antimicrobial use, including talking to clients about responsible use, adopting an antimicrobial stewardship program, and choosing antimicrobials only as needed.
There are some basic strategies for veterinarians to keep in mind in overseeing antimicrobial use:
• have a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship
• weigh all treatment options
• choose antimicrobials wisely and only as needed
• educate clients on disease prevention strategies
• follow-up on treatment plans
• think about the effect your decision may have on public health
Veterinarians need to be prepared for the changes that come into effect on December 1, 2018. The College is providing information to assist you in being attentive to the important changes relating to the prescribing of antimicrobials.
Visit www. cvo. org / AMR to access several resources to assist you in understanding the changes including the College’ s position statement on AMR, the list of antimicrobials requiring a veterinary prescription, timelines, and guidance on the responsible use of medically important antimicrobials in animals.
Further, the College offers a range of information to assist veterinarians in their continued responsible use of antimicrobials.
The College website now contains information pertaining to antimicrobial stewardship for veterinarians whose practice includes aquaculture, farmed and large animals, apiculture, and / or urban farming.
