ADVERTISING ADVICE
ADVERTISING ADVICE FOR MOBILES
Recently Council repealed the limitation on
Companion Animal Mobile veterinarians
providing services from multiple locations. As
a result, veterinarians are able to offer mobile
services at locations such as groomers, pet
stores or similar third-party businesses.
Consequently, questions have arisen with
respect to how these services can be
advertised by the third-party location. The
Veterinarians Act prohibits the “corporate
practi ce” of veterinary medicine, which means
non-veterinary businesses cannot advertise/sell
veterinary services to the public.
In addition, veterinarians who do set up at thirdparty locations are responsible for ensuring
that any advertising regarding their services
complies with the Regulations, whether that
advertisement is generated by themselves or
by the third-party. Practically, this means a thirdparty location cannot use terms like “veterinary
services available”, “veterinary clinic” or “our
veterinarian”.
The location can advertise the factual truth
“We have a mobile veterinarian who visits our
location to provide services” and a link to
information (including the contact information
of that veterinarian). This permits the public to
learn about that veterinarian and determine if
they choose to use that veterinarian’s services.
If you have any questions concerning the
regulations, policy and expectations associated
with the practice of veterinary medicine in
Ontario, please contact the College’s Practice
Advisor at [email protected]
