The Many Benefits of Your
The Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship
(VCPR) is the foundation of effective
veterinary medicine and animal care. In spite
of its significance, it is not well-understood by
the public. While veterinarians understand the
value of the VCPR, how is it that consumers
and potential clients come to appreciate its
significance to them and their animals?
Given this information, the College is
introducing new tools to help veterinarians
in their efforts to explain the VCPR to clients.
The VCPR is now a key component of the
College’s public outreach campaign.

Enjoys a healthy life.

Benefits from continuity of care – medical

Effective communication is central to
the delivery of veterinary medicine. The
veterinarian needs to have sufficient and
recent knowledge of the animal(s) to provide
diagnosis, medications and treatment plans.
As a responsible animal owner, the client has
peace of mind when he/she has confidence
in the veterinarian’s advice. The relationship
is focused on the well-being of the animal,
or group of animals, with each of the parties
sharing responsibilities and enjoying benefits.
In an established relationship between a

Public Outreach
A poster, a video, a client handout and
background information are available. Further,
College Council recently approved a revised
Professional Practice Standard on the VCPR.
The standard and the guide will be published
this spring. Learn more about the VCPR at

The College takes every opportunity to
improve outreach and accessibility to
licensed members. The Communities of
Practice is an exciting new tool to support
these efforts.
Currently being piloted with VetNet, the
Communities of Practice provides an online
venue for licensed members to discuss and
consider matters before the College. The
Communities of Practice enables you to offer
your comments and feedback at your leisure the beauty of the online world!
Benefits from the veterinarian’s knowledge which
protects him/her from adverse drug reactions.

• Read and agree to the Guidelines for Use.
• Download the Emblem package.
• Upload the Emblem to your website’s
server.
• Link the Emblem to http://www.cvo.org/
facilityaccreditation.
The Communities of Practice is located in the
Professional Practice Portal, at www.cvo.org/
Portal. All licensed members are able to login
to the portal with the same username and
password used during licence renewal. If you
have forgotten your password, click the forgot
password link on the portal login page.
In the current pilot phase, VetNet volunteers
will be using the tool to provide feedback
on various initiatives and questions from the
College and will also be offering ideas on
the functionality of the Community and its
components. The pilot phase will conclude
later this spring.
The College looks forward to using the
Communities of Practice to engage with the
veterinary profession online.
The Professional Practice Portal is an
online tool which supports convenient and
efficient communication between the College
and its licensed members. Currently, the
portal houses the CPD Activity Log, the
Communities of Practice, My Profile and the
licence renewal form.
If you have any questions or difficulty with
logging into the Professional Practice Portal,
please contact Kim Huson, Communications
Specialist at khuson@cvo.org.
