outside of Washington, DC. And I hope that you recall that the board of directors selected the iconic Hotel Del Coronado as the groundbreaking location. I suggest that you check it out on hoteldel.com.
The Del was picked because of: (1) the fabulous Crown Room in which the Class 30 induction ceremony will be held; (2) space for the education session, for the College and Foundation board meetings and for the numerous committee meetings; (3) cost and quality of the hotel rooms; (4) an airport to which there are nonstop flights from across the country and the world; and (5) the weather and the beach adjacent to the hotel. And speaking about the weather, AccuWeather tells us that the average mid-March temperature in Washington DC is a high of 56° and a low of 37°. And we know that it often rains then. The averages in San Diego are 66° and 53°. It does rain in San Diego, but the chances of precipitation are far greater in DC.
The board is hopeful that the extra 10° of warmth will help convince you to bring children and grandchildren as well as your spouses and significant others. While you’re in meetings, including the educational program that Scholar in Residence, Professor Ralph Brubaker, is planning, your guests will be able to walk along the miles of broad sandy beach on which the Del sits. And, of course, there’s the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Balboa Park and its array of wonderful museums, Old Town and other attractions.
The Del has hosted celebrities, royalty and beach lovers for generations. Built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, it’s an American treasure with more than a century of stories to tell. It has been visited by celebrities, dignitaries and U.S. presidents, including Benjamin Harrison, William Howard Taft, Franklin Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe. Within the past three years, the hotel underwent millions of dollars of renovations and upgrades.
Now that San Antonio and the successful luncheon, College and Foundation board meetings and many committee meetings are behind us, it’s time to look ahead to the Annual Meeting, I hope that you recall (having read about it in College Columns and having heard about it during recent College luncheons and other meetings) that the for the first time in its 30-year history, the College will be holding the Annual Meeting
