■ Limited-edition 75th Anniversary model( Fender) introduced a new way of thinking about the electric guitar. Every component existed for a reason, every manufacturing step served a purpose, and nothing remained simply because tradition had placed it there.
Keep in mind that when the Telecaster entered production, the Stratocaster, Jazzmaster, and Jazz Bass still lay years in the future, not even a gleam in Leo Fender’ s eye. Much of Fender’ s electric instrument lineage would grow from ideas first proven on the Telecaster platform.
The remarkable part is how much of that original thinking survived. The Telecaster accumulated seventy-five years of revisions, arguments, experiments, and refinements, and yet the architecture remained largely intact. Some of the most revealing stories involve the ideas that almost made it into production.
At the 1949 NAMM show in New York, Leo argued for eliminating the truss rod altogether. Hard maple seemed stable enough in Southern California, and removing the rod would reduce cost and simplify production.( In that respect, Leo shared more with the later CBS-era emphasis
