The Telecaster, Stratocaster, Precision Bass, and Bassman amplifier did more than become successful products. Together they helped define the sound, feel, and architecture of the electric age. Musicians and historians have compared Fender’ s influence on musical instruments to the impact Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla had on electrical engineering. Fender was not simply building instruments; he was reimagining what electric instruments could become.
Years after the Telecaster transformed popular music, Fender still described its creation in remarkably practical terms. He wanted a guitar that sounded good, stayed in tune, survived the demands of working musicians, and could be repaired without returning to the factory.“ If a thing is easy to service,” he once remarked,“ it is easy to build.”
