which is about a man’ s last night in prison before they execute him. He’ s writing a letter home to the only girl he ever met because he went to prison when he was so young. All of the other songs on the record are actually about my life. And I guess because I’ m a new writer I wrote about the thing that I knew most. Not Enough Whiskey is about the final realization that if you want to go out and have a drink, make sure it’ s because you’ re having fun, but if you’ re dealing with really hard stuff in your life, that might be the time to put it away. So they all came from very personal places kind of in that same vein of me exploring my own life.
[ CG ] When do you think the next record will come out?
KIEFER SUTHERLAND INTERVIEW continued from page 21
Kiefer: We’ re a good way into the second record now. I’ m really proud of this first record and I plan to try and work it for quite some time. And I honestly want to make sure that the second record is on par with that, and I think Jude feels the same. But certainly we’ re hoping to release the next one within eight to ten months. I do want to take a lot of time to get this record out there and play as many dates as I can and try and get people to listen to it.
[ CG ] What does playing the guitar, singing, and songwriting provide to you that acting doesn’ t?
Kiefer: It’ s a much more personal expression. I’ m not hiding behind a character and I’ ve said throughout my entire career, and make no mistake about it, I will be an actor until the day I die. It’ s what I’ ve done for thirty years and it’ s something that I love immensely. But I’ ve always said in every interview that as an art form, me personally, I would rather sit and listen to an album than I would go to a movie. Music has just influenced me as a listener and has had an impact on my life in a way that is almost hard for me to articulate. It’ s incredible to be able to express myself creatively and in a personal way with music. I’ ve made over 100 films and made 200 episodes of 24. I’ ve only recorded 13 songs, and yet there’ s a great sense of accomplishment when one completes a song and it’ s sounding the way that you like it, and it’ s representing itself lyrically and musically the way you want it to that’ s very fresh for me, and it’ s very new and it’ s made me feel really alive. If only for that reason alone I would like to be able to do this for quite some time!
I found Sutherland to be very fun and engaging while talking about his guitars and songs in this interview. In fact, he went over our allotted time and apologized because he was having so much fun talking about his passion for all things music. Kiefer brings an honesty and sincerity to the roles he performs and the music he plays. His knowledge of vintage guitars has been cultivated by his associations with some of the most knowledgeable dealers in the business, like George Gruhn and Norm Harris. Much like his acting career, Sutherland is in music for the long haul!
