NEWS INCORPORATING COLD CHAIN In conversation with: Lucien Jansen, PPECB CEO Lucien Jansen, the new PPECB CEO as of 1 July. S outh Africa's official export certification agency, the Perishable Products Export Control Board (PPECB) appointed Lucien Jansen as its new chief executive officer (CEO) on 1 July. We ask Jansen a couple of questions on the role of the board within the industry and how he sees the future… 1. Why are you the right man for the job? Lucien Jansen (LJ): I have been working in the perishable produce industry for the past 10 years and gained valuable 4 knowledge on the dynamics within the perishable produce exports industry. The industry is ever-changing and requires a great degree of flexibility. I am responsive of nature and generally possess good stakeholder management skills. I believe my conceptual thinking and action-orientated nature will be of great value in building on the past performances of the PPECB. organisational culture that can support the organisation’s objectives. I will dedicate my tenure to ensure that we capitalise on this and become even more service-orientated and customer-focussed. Although the PPECB is relatively well-known in the industry, I believe there is still some confusion in terms of the value that the PPECB adds – this certainly something we want to change. 2. How do you see the role of the PPECB within industry? LJ: The PPECB is an independent assurer of quality for the perishable products destined for export. In partnership with industry and government, the PPECB provides world-wide confidence in South African perishable produce.  4. How do you see the future of the PPECB? I believe that the PPECB will continue playing a pivotal role in ensuring product quality; it might however be done differently. I further believe that the PPECB is ideally positioned to play an even greater role in providing relevant statistical information to the export industry and further expanding on its food safety mandate. 3. What issues will you be addressing within the organisation, and the industry, in your new capacity as CEO? LJ: Over the past few years, the PPECB made great progress on creating an About Lucien Jansen Jansen was appointed as CEO on a five-year fixed-term contract. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration www.coldlinkafrica.co.za from the University of Stellenbosch and his career at the PPECB began 10 years ago when he was appointed as regional service manager for the Western Cape. In 2010, he was appointed as manager to the PPECB’s Project Management office, focusing on introducing a project management framework to manage strategic projects for the PPECB as well as coordinating organisational performance. Since 2013 he held the position of general manager: Corporate affairs division, responsible for managing the legal and governance function; marketing and communications; occupational health and safety, business process auditing; research and innovation; harmonisation; business certification; food safety and development and championing high-level stakeholder engagement.
