Electrovent celebrates 50 years of fire safety innovation and growth
In 2025, Electrovent will commemorate its 50th anniversary, having evolved from a modest idea conceived in a back garden to a prominent manufacturer of fire safety solutions.
Mark Stanford, managing director, and Charles Deacon, national sales manager of Electrovent, reflect on five decades marked by a steadfast commitment to quality, efficiency and family values.
Electrovent ' s journey commenced in 1975, founded by notable industry figures Bill Brown and Tony Williams. Their initial objective was to provide an alternative to existing fire damper solutions. As Stanford recounts, their first fire damper was“ tested in a braai in the back garden." While Brown eventually departed, Williams, alongside his son-in-law Ian Smith, diligently built the company over four decades. After Williams ' passing in 2016 and Smith ' s decision to retire, Stanford acquired the business in 2017, inheriting a company deeply rooted in family values.
Upon assuming leadership, Stanford, a mechanical engineer with entrepreneurial aspirations, recognised the significant potential within Electrovent. Though not a small enterprise, it operated with a family-owned ethos, which Stanford was keen to preserve. He proudly asserts that Electrovent continues to uphold " top quality values," expanding from a " small family business " into a recognised medium-sized enterprise( SME).
A pivotal aspect of Electrovent ' s transformation under Stanford ' s guidance has been the strategic investment in enhancing its manufacturing capabilities. In 2017, the company depended on a single machine for most operations, causing significant bottlenecks during breakdowns. To address this vulnerability and increase capacity, Electrovent embarked on an ambitious programme to acquire additional more sophisticated equipment. The transition from manual to CNC( Computer Numerical Control) machines was particularly crucial.
This investment in redundancy led to a substantial increase in production capacity. " When we acquired the business, operations were at full capacity," Stanford recalls.“ The struggles to fulfill large orders, often requiring staff to work extended hours, were unsustainable. By introducing redundancy, we mitigated the risk of production halts and significantly increased output.”
The most tangible result of these technological upgrades has been a dramatic reduction in lead times. Whereas production once took two weeks or more in 2017, it now generally takes a maximum of one week, often less. " This is probably our single biggest competitive advantage in the market currently," Stanford notes.
LOCAL MANUFACTURING WITH A GLOBAL VISION
Electrovent remains a committed local manufacturer, with all production conducted in Cape Town. While fire dampers remain its core expertise, the company has strategically expanded its product portfolio to include firerated airtight doors, further consolidating its position in the fire safety market.

security issues. In response, Electrovent has made a substantial investment in solar energy, ensuring consistent production while aligning with environmental sustainability and responsible practices.
Supported by a team of design engineers and draftsmen, Stanford ' s technical background and market insight drive Electrovent ' s R & D initiatives. A prime example of customer-driven innovation is the development of their firerated airtight doors. Having produced airtight doors for years, customer feedback prompted the question, " Well, do you have a fire-rated version?" This simple query led to a rigorous process involving six fire tests and years of dedicated R & D. The result is that Electrovent now offers the " only SANS1293 class D fire rated airtight door available ", according to Stanford. These specialised doors are essential for areas containing flammable materials, such as warehouses or diesel rooms, designed to withstand intense heat— approximately 1 000 ° C— for a two-hour period.
Electrovent ' s SANS and ISO9001 certifications have recently been renewed, affirming their commitment to quality. " All of our products, where there is an applicable specification, rigidly comply with that," says Stanford.
Deacon highlights Electrovent ' s ambitions to expand into African markets, leveraging its established reputation for quality and reliability. The company remains focused, deliberately avoiding trying to be " all things to all people," a strategy he believes is not necessarily successful. Instead, Electrovent concentrates on its core competencies. Future developments will primarily involve " variations in a similar vein with small deviations " from their established product lines, maintaining their expertise in fire safety solutions.
A significant part of their forward-looking strategy involves exploring new markets, with Africa being a priority. Although still in progress, this planned expansion signifies Electrovent ' s ambition to extend its reach and bring its highquality, locally manufactured fire safety products to a broader regional audience. The company ' s 50-year legacy, marked by resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to standards, positions it strongly for this next chapter of growth and impact. CLA
