have proven especially beneficial for industrial-scale refrigeration. Utilising multiple compressors within a modular configuration offers key advantages. For example, it allows system designers to separate functions like commissioning and storage across distinct temperature levels – optimising performance for each zone.
|
Additionally, modular systems excel in partload conditions, as capacity can be better managed with multiple smaller compressors compared to a single large one.
This is particularly important for industrial facilities, such as distribution centres or food processing plants, where refrigeration demand is highly variable. These operations

Despite the clear

industry often prefers familiar,
standardised technologies.
Modular systems using
flash gas bypass and direct
expansion evaporation remain
popular due to their simplicity
and reliability. Efficiency gains
are typically achieved through
improved heat exchangers or
more advanced compressors, rather than
through complex enhancements that add
technical complexity or operational risk.

AIR PRODUCTS RESPONDS TO MARKET DEMAND BY INVESTING IN A NEW CO2 FACILITY IN SASOLBURG
Air Products has commissioned a new CO2
production facility in Sasolburg to address
growing demand and fill supply gaps during
peak periods. The plant, sourcing CO₂ from
Sasol’ s N-Butanol facility, produces foodgrade
CO₂ for current and future clients.
The project showcases technical innovation
and collaboration between Air Products
and Sasol. Built over 24 months, the facility
is undergoing FSSC 22 000 certification,
ensuring it meets food and beverage
industry standards. This investment
strengthens Air Products ' position as a
reliable CO₂ supplier in South Africa.
