across the globe . Some of the highlights include :
• Collaborating with industry partners and stakeholders to improve cold chain infrastructure in developing countries .
• Supporting programmes and projects that focus on reducing food loss and waste throughout the supply chain .
• Providing training and capacity building opportunities to cold storage practitioners , logistics professionals and other stakeholders .
• Participating in global events and conferences to advocate for the importance of the cold chain industry and to share best practices .
• Conducting research and studies to gather data and insights on the challenges and opportunities in the global cold chain market .
Switching gears , Thocher shared insights from his travels to six of the seven continents over the past year . The GCCA conducts an annual survey of the industry to track changes in refrigerated temperature control capacity . While the top three companies remained consistent , there has been significant movement among the companies ranked six to 25 . Between 2022 and 2023 , GCCA members increased their capacity by over 21 million cubic meters , reaching a total of 210 million cubic meters worldwide .
He further highlighted the industry ' s growth , noting the addition of five new
companies to the top 25 list . The barrier to entry for this list is 21 million cubic feet , “ and it ' s remarkable to see emerging market players making significant progress ” with two companies in the top having experienced a capacity growth year-overyear of 53 % and 43 % respectively . “ This showcases the global expansion and industry growth not limited to the major players or big markets ,” says Thocher .
He then addressed the issue of food loss and waste , which is a major concern globally . He mentioned statistics , such as the more than 780 million people experiencing hunger , and one-third of the world ' s food production going to waste . In developing countries , including those in Africa , limited resources and debt burdens hinder their ability to invest fully in their food systems . Thocher emphasised that this issue is not just about hunger , but also affects sustainability and environmental impact . “ Unsustainable food production , packaging and human consumption are contributing to the climate crisis . One-third of all greenhouse gas emissions in the world come from food loss or food waste , and food production consumes 70 % of the world ' s freshwater . This is a significant challenge that we have the opportunity to address .
“ Through the GCCA Foundation and our partnership with the global food banking network , we are working with storage providers globally to reduce food loss and waste . By making a small dent in the amount
of food wasted from our own facilities and communities , we can make a huge impact in feeding the population ,” he says .
Turning to the financial markets : “ While I was initially concerned about a recession , the interest rates have remained stable , keeping the economy afloat . However , we are still far from the desired 2 % inflation rate . If inflation is not controlled , it could lead to destabilisation , unpredictable inflation and challenges for families and businesses . It is important to monitor the global financial markets as events in the US and Europe can have significant effects worldwide .”
Regarding the real estate market , the first quarter of 2023 saw uncertainty and stalled decision-making . The banking sector distress added volatility to the market , but luckily the crisis did not escalate as much as feared . Lending standards have tightened globally . “ The food inflationary pressure we discussed earlier has had market impacts with 77 % of consumers in North America having reduced their grocery store purchases in at least one category of items . However , click-and-collect sales and smaller basket sizes have increased by about 60 %. It is crucial to monitor these trends and adapt to changing consumer preferences in local markets to provide the right services to customers ,” says Thocher .
“ Moving on to energy : global primary energy consumption reached an all-time high last year , with the world ' s total energy consumption nearly four times higher than in 1965 . This is driven by increasing energy
demand , particularly in higher middleincome countries . Interestingly , the primary energy demand in non-OECD countries surpassed that of OECD countries about 15 years ago . In Africa , there is a significant opportunity in the energy sector . With 13 % of global gas reserves and the potential for investment in renewables , Africa could become a net energy producer or exporter to global markets . As concerns about volatility in other energy markets grow , Africa has the potential to provide alternative sources .
“ However , it is important to address challenges such as delivering a highquality product and minimising government interference to fully maximise this opportunity . In terms of energy , we must also be prepared for price fluctuations and plan for uncertainties in the global geopolitical landscape . While I don ' t want to end on a depressing note , it is important to acknowledge the uncertainties , while also recognising the immense opportunities for Africa in the energy sector . Thank you for listening ,” he concluded . CLA
