IWC supplies cooling towers for new plant upgrade at Tetra Pak
IWC | Industrial Water Cooling recently supplied and installed four new package cooling towers to Tetra Pak Southern Africa , the local operation of the world leading food processing and packaging solutions company .
The new cooling towers are part of the HVAC system for the packaging plant and are used to cool the air-conditioning system and the ink printer that is used to produce all the packaging labels .
Being ISO accredited guarantees that IWC built their towers according to strict quality standards ( see below ) which is of paramount importance to Tetra Pak , since they provide packaging for some of the largest food and beverage companies in southern Africa .
As Tetra Pak was expanding its plant , it was time to upgrade the current cooling system . This meant removing the old stainless steel cooling towers and replacing the towers with four shiny new EWK 1000 GRP cooling towers .
The location and space for the new installation posed quite a challenge , but thanks to the compact design of the EWK range , the problem was solved . A special raised platform was erected to raise the towers off the ground , so as to allow a forklift to move around the site . One small pipe change was implemented , and the towers were installed without affecting the plant layout .
The new towers have an especially high cooling capacity , re-cooling of up to 350m ³ of water per hour in a single tower . The new towers have a lower energy consumption compared to other cooling towers , making them ideal for companies looking for an environmentally friendly cooling solution .
The towers are also easy to maintain due to the induced draught fans . These fans are easily accessible and simple to replace or repair due to the fit-on design .
TETRA PAK ’ S PINETOWN FACTORY WINS PRESTIGIOUS CONSISTENCY AWARD FROM JIPM
Tetra Pak Southern Africa plays a significant role in the cold chain . It provides processing and packaging solutions for various food and beverage products , including ice cream , cheese , pet food , fruit , vegetables and liquid food products . Tetra Pak ’ s Pinetown factory in South Africa serves as its southern African hub . The company ’ s investment of R500-million in the Pinetown plant has contributed to boosting the regional economy and creating several indirect and direct jobs . Tetra Pak ’ s activities in southern Africa encompass countries such as South Africa , Botswana , Lesotho , Mozambique , Namibia , Swaziland , Zambia and Zimbabwe .
Tetra Pak Southern Africa was recently honoured with the 2023 Total Productive Maintenance ( TPM ) Plant Maintenance Consistency Award from the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance . This award recognises excellence in plant maintenance .

The company received the prestigious TPM Consistency Award for its Pinetown manufacturing facility in Pinetown – the only producer of aseptic carton packages in the southern Africa region .
Established in 1964 by the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance ( JIPM ), the various TPM Awards rigorously evaluate a company or plant-wide commitment to sustain superlative production capabilities and world-class quality standards . The awards have been instrumental in strengthening the improvement of enterprises and contributing to the development of industry by promoting the modernisation of plant maintenance and the development of plant maintenance technologies .
In its 43-year history in South Africa , Tetra Pak ’ s factory in Pinetown has already achieved several certification milestones . The factory has been certified against various international standards such as ISO 9000 Quality Management System ,
ISO14000 Environment Management System , ISO 18000 Occupational Health and Safety and BRC IOP Food Safety Standards . On the path to achieving this latest award Tetra Pak introduced its World Class Manufacturing ( WCM ) philosophy to consciously pursue attainment of the award .
Achieving a Consistency Award is clearly not achieved overnight – as ‘ consistency ’ has to be amply demonstrated . The journey at the Pinetown factory started quite some time ago , when the team achieved their first JIPM Award in 2019 .
The future is looking bright for Tetra Pak ’ s Pinetown factory , which is currently undergoing a modernisation upgrade named Project Indonsa . It was launched last year , aimed to enable more advanced pre-laminated hole ( PLH ) production at the factory . CLA
