Penning the editor’s column of our November/ December edition is not something I thought would sneak up on me so quickly — where did the time go? I am fully aware that people say this every year; it always feels like time has gone by too quickly. But this year particularly has been a rollercoaster — and a fast one at that. There is no going back; there never is. All you can do is take this time to reflect on the year that was; to take stock before industry shuts down to reboot again in 2019. There is no denying that financially, this was probably not such a good year. We thought 2017 was rough, but 2018 really kicked the wind out of many cold chain stakeholders across the country (and beyond). Political instability didn’t help the situation much, neither did the dwindling economy. Projects were put on hold left, right, and centre and budgets seemed to dry up faster than the radio could spit out another scandal, another fraudulent partnership, another devastating blow to the already fragile business sector of South Africa. But a rollercoaster goes both up and down, doesn’t it? It wasn’t all bad news. Despite the seemingly depressing state of affairs, life went on. We hosted the best FRIGAIR yet in June, gaining global recognition and successfully showing off the best the industry has to offer with this truly world-class exhibition. ASHRAE formed a local Chapter. Some cutting- edge projects were commissioned that are really worth showing off. All this and so much more — remember the good parts, learn from the not-so-good ones. We cannot change what happened, but we can change how we pick ourselves up and start again in the new year. What was your 2018 like? What were your highs, your lows, your memorable achievements that you will remember for life? Now is the time to take stock. Now is the time to work through it all and ready yourself for a great 2019. Don’t rely on external factors getting better … you should get better! Also, take some time off this holiday period to spend with loved ones. Work will always be there, but it is important to find balance and take stock of what really matters to you in your life. Rest out well; 2019 will be a challenge. But it will be one that you should accept with open arms! No matter how difficult the world gets out there, we’ll always be here to show you the silver lining. So, have a look at this jam-packed edition to see what is happening in the cold chain, locally and beyond. See what is out there, get inspired; contribute to the inspiration — not the depression. PS Keep an eye out for the 2019 HEVAC&R Directory that will be out soon. A lot of hard work went into compiling this up to date who’s who of the industry, and it will help a lot in making sure you find the right people for the job to assist you in making your business a success next year.
