INCORPORATING COLD CHAIN
Wineries Seminar
talks efficiency
The annual Wineries Seminar took place in August and looked at various topical issues like the
R22 phase out, thermostatic wine tank temperature control, high efficiency chillers, starting a
brewery, and cooling tower water treatment.
T
he 6th annual seminar took place on 4 August at the
Slanghoek Mountain Resort in Rawsonville, Western
Cape and gathered about 40 variously interested
parties for a day of information sharing applicable to the
industry. Winemakers from around the country attended
— some as far afield as the Upington area.
All sponsors gave presentations and speakers for the
day included the following:
• Steven Palvi (Wynroete Verkoeling) started things
off with an introduction as the organisers of the
annual event.
• Carlo van Wyk (AerSA/Apollo Air) chatted about the
new Aermec chillers and cooling options, as well as
future products, which will be HCFC free and have low
global warming impact. He mentioned that all their
chillers have been adopted to meet the Montreal
Protocol requirements and emphasised the company’s
internal focus on addressing global warming.
• Pieter Louw (Wijnland Engineering) looked at wine
tank temperature control installations and the
advantages thereof.
•
•
Shaun Whitehead (Toscana Enologica Mori SA)
looked at beer brewing and even had some
samples for tasting.
Dicky Post (Water Cure Water Treatment)
presented on their water treatment system for
cooling towers to maintain heat transfer efficiency
and to ensure there is no fouling, especially in
areas where water quality isn’t as good as it should
be, for instance in certain rural areas.
consider refrigerants with low global warming potential and not
just look at price,” he said. “Sustainability should be an important
consideration.”
After the presentations, it was time to give away some prizes and
a lucky draw ensued before the day concluded with a traditional
Boland-style lunch.

Future of refrigerants
John Ackermann, Cold Link Africa editor, gave an
update on the HCFC phase out in South Arica and
the regulations in place to control refrigerants. He also
looked at future trends and how the looming HFC
phase out would affect the country.
Ackermann cautioned guests that the phase out
could be accelerated after the new meeting of the
Parties to the Montreal Protocol and new installations
should consider this when selecting refrigerants. “When
selecting a new refrigeration system, you need to
