SARDA cold store operator award
deadline extended
T
he Southern African Refrigerated
Distribution Association (SARDA) 2016
Cold Store Operators award deadline
has been extended to 31 October 2016.
The winner of this award will travel to the
International Association of Refrigerated
Warehouses (IARW) Conference in the US
in April 2017 and have all expenses paid.

The competition is open to operators
of ALL cold stores with a storage capacity
exceeding 500 pallets in Southern Africa.
The store could be an inhouse cold store or
a public store, chill store, fruit store, or third
party distribution centre.
The competition aims to select the
region’s best young individual to compete
in the US against the best in Australia and
the US.
Entrants for the 2016 SARDA Tony Lewis
Cold Store Award should match the
following criteria:
1. Currently employed in a cold or freezer
store in Southern Africa.
2. Born in 1981 or before (age of 35 years
or younger).
3. At least three years’ experience in a
supervisory/management position in a
cold store.
4. Have a broad knowledge of the cold
storage industry in Southern Africa.
5. Cold store where currently employed
has a pallet storage capacity of 500
pallets or more.

Initially each entrant will be judged
on the basis of a written application
detailing personal experience and their
understanding of food safety standards as
applied in cold/chill stores.
Finalists will travel to Cape Town (all
expenses paid) for judging. The winner
will attend the 2017 Global Cold Chain
Alliance convention in Los Angeles in April
2017 (all expenses paid) and will make a
presentation to the 700+ delegates.
As his prize, the winner of the 2014
competition, Ivan Sutic of Chilleweni Cold
Store in Johannesburg had his expenses
paid to attend and compete at the 2015
IARW – WFLO Conference and Expo held in
Orlando, Florida USA in April 2015.

working at Irvin & Johnson Ltd as the
local production manager in 1957 after
spending seven years at the Fishing
Industry Research Institute where he
worked under the direction of Dr Dreosti
