Insurer stance to be monitored

As the South African business environment seems to continually be battered and burdened these days by economic conditions , policy , tax structures – new , old and proposed , stock shortages , electricity generation capacity and many other challenges , insurance may soon become another ‘ red flag ’ for the cold chain .

On attending a recent seminar on insurance and cold stores particularly , what I found most interesting was the way in which insurance for the sector , and business in general was forecast for the short to medium term based on the circumstances of global trends , and what has resulted from local occurrences – namely the rioting and looting of 2021 and the continual energy disruptions business has to endure that both have farreaching impacts .
Little known is that the entity covering these types of incidents , through SASRIA SOC Ltd , was the recipient of nearly 17 000 claims over this period , totalling tens of billions of rands . To paint a picture for proportion , this SOC would deal with a handful of claims a year , a figure was illustrated in the region of around 20 – thus showing a clear picture of the devastation that actually happened - and of course the resulting coverage changes and premium adjustments upwards to be expected above the effects of the pandemic . A shocking figure increase of 20-fold was mentioned for SASRIA policy holders .
For cold stores , given their reputation of high risk , some insurers have totally excluded cover for such facilities in other countries
already , paving the way for potentially the same outcome elsewhere on the globe . The poor reputation of and erratic cases of unrest on the local front is also not favourable when insurers consider risk profiles that determine premiums – that are then most often transferred to the consumers through price increases .
Other points to highlight ( not highlights though ), was the progress already underway in terms of exclusions on policies – with particular reference towards an increasing trend in claims because of electricity supply or electricity disruption ( business interruption ) and basic services such as water . Here it is known that many municipalities cannot maintain the required pressure for fire hydrants because of poorly-maintained or failing infrastructure , and therefore should this be the case at any particular site , the facility owners would be required to provide an alternative - as already is becoming common with alternate energy sources .
Further , a specific requirement of maintenance is under the spotlight , where policy exclusions would apply should the facility owner not be able to prove regular overall maintenance and servicing of all riskassociated items to a policy .
A common thread did emerge that should be mentioned too – this being the fact that as business partners , the insurance provider and broker intend to walk a long pathway with their clients and being proactive in any risk management strategies needs to be regularly communicated , rather than on policy renewal times as tick box exercises . Also , the regular
changing of insurance service providers does not do any party good and is advised against . Proper evaluation of business fit should be undertaken from the engagement stages not to change every year owing to “ best price ”, which is an unfortunate condition of many sectors in this country .
Business owners are still urged to review their policies on renewal owing to the several changes around the insurance sector as it adapts to local and global trends and conditions .
As the official FRIGAIR 2022 issue of Cold Link Africa , we cover various news from the local and international fronts , we look at some association updates , our regular contributors offer some thoughts and guidance from their specialist views . We also carry a feature on humidity control in this issue .
Our main feature is on the FRIGAIR 2022 experience and what you can do to make your visit work for you as well as some things you need to keep in mind about the exhibition and the workshops that will take place concurrently . Don ’ t forget that this year , FRIGAIR 2022 is co-located with other exhibitions that are pertinent to the HERVAC sectors , so go and check these out at Gallagher Convention Centre too while you are there – they include Facilities Management , Securex and AOSH .
As always , I welcome your engagement to keep Cold Link Africa a top notch and worldclassed brand – this publication is all for you so please do let me know of your thoughts , views , opinions or suggestions – no matter if compliment or complaint !
