PROJECT
INCORPORATING COLD CHAIN
outdoor wet bulb. The system is designed
to reduce fogging and ice surface
condensation. Relative humidity at, or
below, 80% with ice rink temperatures
between 5°C and 15°C is usually sufficient to
eliminate fogging. However, condensation
can occur on the ceiling or roof structure
due to radiation from the building structure
to the ice.
Low relative humidity is maintained in
this system to reduce this condition when
the high emissivity ceiling is exposed to
the ice surface. Since the ice’s surface
temperature cannot be measured easily,
the ice condition is customarily controlled
from predetermined coolant average
temperature and from the ice temperature
measured by the thermocouple embedded
beneath the ice surface.
With approximately 7°C air temperature
and 50mm ice thickness, ice at -6.5°C to
-5.5°C is satisfactory for hockey, -4°C to
-3°C for figure skating, and -3°C to -2°C for
recreational skating, says Vuletic. CLA
