INCORPORATING COLD CHAIN training and raising awareness about what to do and how to react if you are involved in an incident . It is so encouraging to know that the message is getting out there . Taking this course for AMC , everyone realised how important it is to understand how to deal with an ammonia incident and how to handle a situation should it arise .
We had a really good session with lots of questions where myths about Ammonia were debunked , such as how toxic it is – you always know it is there . There is no mistaking the smell of ammonia . Take the lid off that bottle of Handy Andy and catch a whiff – that ’ s around five parts per million . It is safe to work at 25ppm for eight hours in a 40-hour work week . It is commonly known as self-alarming . But what do you do if you get trapped in a cloud of ammonia ? That ’ s what this training is all about . If you can escape , escape . If not , then shelter in place or use wet rags .
The general consensus after the training was that they are better prepared to respond to an incident should they be involved in one when on site . They know what PPE to use and how to use it – and more importantly , they know what to do if they have no PPE available .
We also spoke at length about what a SANS 1514 Emergency Plan entailed and why it is so important that this plan is a working document . We have developed , in collaboration with ASTI , a response pack which is an important integral part of the document tying together the different phases of an emergency with step-bystep procedures . This makes it a working document , not just a legal requirement to have one that lives in a bottom drawer somewhere .
We need more forward-thinking organisations like AMC Engineers – safety has to be the priority . So much so that AMC took a day off for the full team , along with clients , to attend to the training . We need more of this in the industry . ‘ Till next month , stay safe .
