The AHR Expo (page 30) officially opened 2020 and MCE Italy is set to raise the bar for the rest of the year. A few others and I were at AHR. We met an enthusiastic bunch of people. The biggest takeaway from the conference was being faced with new products on display throughout the hall everywhere you turned. Wow! It’s both encouraging and inspiring to see the industry ready to change the scene. We got a lot of ideas and boy, oh boy, I can’t wait for it all be executed at FRIGAIR 2021 (page 25). A lot more events, locally and internationally, are on the cards and it can be daunting to keep track of it all, however, it shows how the HVAC&R industry is keen to come together to discuss anything that affects it and to source practical solutions to do so, whether it be regarding standards, new product innovations, refreshed courses, or accreditations. Yes, the sector remained stagnant last year, despite the fact that we put on our hard hats and boots and got the job done. That alone is what keeps us ahead in the construction industry. Read more on this in the Events section. COLD LINK AFRICA • March/April 2020 Near the end of January, construction contractors’ body, Master Builders South Africa (MBSA), shared concerns regarding the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology placing the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) under administration – again (page 15). This of course affects the training aspect and raises serious concerns on the future thereof, especially following the progress made by ACRA, to put in place training meant to grow the industry. We will keep a close eye on this and hopefully it gets resolved ASAP. The increased attention on natural refrigerants has created some uncertainties, the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) has released a White Paper that aims to provide insight in the evolution of CO 2 refrigeration technologies. The white paper includes background and case studies that can provide members with useful information as they consider future refrigerant choices (page 11). The HCFC stakeholders meeting and Kigali Amendment Legislative Workshop took place in Cape Town to further discuss opportunities towards the uptake of low GWP non-HFC alternative technologies, energy efficiency in the cooling sector and safety standards while phasing down HFCs under the Kigali Amendment. Find a detailed analysis offered by John Ackermann on page 20. Spoiler alert: South Africa is taking satisfactory strides in that direction. High five to all involved! Our cover project is a brewery at Hey Joe Brewing located in the Mother City. This is beer that is locally crafted with Belgian roots. The legend behind its origins is as fascinating as its beer making process. Read more about it on page 16. China has been hit with a virus that is affecting the import and export of goods from the region. The Coronavirus has caused panic and a lot of suppliers have halted doing business in China. The virus has come as a shock; however, China is working hard to prevent the spread of it – with building a specialised hospital in seven days and all. The Asians work ethic and determination is truly admirable. We as South Africans can learn from this. There’s just too much politics that surrounds service delivery. Load shedding being the latest phenomenon – some industry players are looking at implementing alternatives – like thermal storage – “just to be on the safe side”, while the country sorts itself out. EDITOR’S COLUMN I’m optimistic about the future, we all have so much to offer. We can go further and do so much more together. This is what Q1 has divulged so far, I’m ready for the next leg.
