INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS NEWS INCORPORATING COLD CHAIN WFLO releases White Paper on CO 2 trend in warehouse industry he publication by the World Food Logistics Organisation (WFLO) is developed by the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) Refrigeration and Energy Committee. With increased regulatory attention on ammonia and the long-term uncertainties with some of the synthetic refrigerants, it is important for cold chain logistics providers to understand the evolution of CO 2 refrigeration technologies as they evaluate which refrigerants and systems are most effective for their situation. All of these refrigerants can be viable choices depending on their application. This white paper includes background and case studies that can provide members with useful information as they consider future refrigerant choices. “The case studies presented in this paper clearly illustrate that an effective metric to use when comparing trans COLD LINK AFRICA • March/April 2020 critical CO 2 systems to traditional refrigeration systems is the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) metric,” says Eric Teale, Business Development manager – Industrial Refrigeration for Danfoss. “When TCO is used, the relatively minor inefficiencies of a trans critical CO 2 system are offset by larger factors that provide a lower TCO as compared to traditional refrigeration systems. Trans critical CO 2 systems are a viable alternative to traditional refrigeration systems.” The use of TCO is significant in the refrigerated warehouse industry. Paul Henningsen, president, Henningsen Cold Storage Co., says, “We place a great emphasis not only on the safety of our associates, the environment, and the products we are entrusted with by our customers, but also on energy efficiency, continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and sustainability. Trans- critical carbon dioxide refrigeration has been a great solution to meet all of our objectives, including the added benefit of a reduced construction schedule and lower construction costs.” The complimentary white paper may be downloaded from the GCCA website. CLA T Partner of GCCA, WFLO, has published a new cold chain industry white paper on the use of transcritical CO 2 refrigerant in the refrigerated warehouse industry. The White Paper looks at the increased use of CO 2 in warehouses and presents comparative data to other refrigerants. www.coldlinkafrica.co.za 11
