In memory of John Kidd

John Kidd( born 19 January 1936) passed away on 5 October 2017. We remember his life and his work …

John Kidd was born in the UK and moved to Kenya with his family as a child. After his schooling at the Duke of York in Kenya, he returned to the UK to gain his engineering qualification as an apprentice with J & E Halls in Dartford. He also studied at the South Bank University in London.
While at Dartford, John met Shelagh and they married in 1958, and had two daughters, Sue and Pippa. After their return to Kenya, John worked for Hall Thermotank until he and Shelagh moved to South Africa in 1984.
In South Africa, John became a York man and remained committed to them until his retirement. He went through the phases of change from Mining Industrial & Air Conditioning( MIAC) York South Africa and finally to the present as part of Johnson Controls International.
John’ s speciality was mine cooling, both with R134a and ammonia, and he engineered some very large projects, such as Amandelbult Platinum Mine. There were a number of phases and each had 6MW of cooling. John also engineered cooling systems for deeplevel gold mines and was well respected by his peers for his wealth of experience.
“ When I arrived at York 15 years ago, I lacked experience and John was never hesitant to share his knowledge and expertise with me. He would go to great lengths to explain the finer technical details of very complex problems. I have often said that I wish I knew what John had forgotten. Besides

his expertise, I respected him as a fine English gentleman who always kept to his word,” says Russel Hattingh, engineering manager at Johnson Controls International, Johannesburg.
Throughout the industry, John was respected as a true gentleman.
“ John was very meticulous, to the point of being a perfectionist. He had York at heart and engineered very large mine cooling projects exceeding 25MW. He was a true gentleman and I never saw him angry with any person, but always acted calmly and treated others with respect,” says Dio Del Castilo of BEE Consulting.
John was a Fellow( no. 1 592) of the South African Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning( SAIRAC) and also served on the executive committee of the Refrigeration and Airconditioning Manufacturing and Suppliers Association( RAMSA).
At the age of 73, John retired from fulltime employment and continued working part time. His favourite pastime was playing golf and he enjoyed travelling. After moving to South Africa, he joined the Bryanston Golf Club and latterly played in the Tuesday Club. He enjoyed socialising at the 100 Club on a Friday and celebrated his 80th birthday there with a number of friends.
He also enjoyed staying at the bush camps in Kenya and going out early to see what game he could photograph for his great-grandchildren.
When not working, on the golf course, or spending time with his family, he enjoyed walking and gardening.
He nursed his wife full time in the last years of her life before she passed away

John Kidd passed away on 5 October 2017.
in 2012. After her death, he started to travel again, visiting Australia, cruising the fjords, taking a canal boat down part of the UK canal system with a friend, travelling across Switzerland by train, as well as visiting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Kenya and the UK regularly.
Shortly after returning from travelling to Kenya in 2017, he took ill and that led to his unexpected passing. It is believed that he contracted some illness while in Kenya.
John Kidd will long be remembered as a legend in mine cooling and the true English gentleman who had York at heart. If our industry and modern society had more persons with the qualities, abilities, and principles of John Kidd, it would be in a much better state. Peace be with you, John Kidd. Our condolences to his surviving daughter, Sue, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. CLA
