INCORPORATING COLD CHAIN
Serco helps further driver
training at Coca-Cola
C
simulators – to train bakkie and forklift
drivers in any area in South Africa.
Serco is proud to
have been chosen to
build the vehicle bodies
for CCBSA’s new
training simulators
Riaan Harmse, national fleet logistics
controller at CCBSA, says his company is
impressed with the final Serco product.
The driver simulators are a valuable
addition to the hands-on training by
experienced, in-cab instructors. Benefits
include that there are no real safety
concerns for drivers and equipment
while undergoing training; there is also no
wear and tear or fuel used on the actual
trucks during training activities.
Harmse says once fully operational,
drivers will be trained in the units and
after successfully completing the
course, they will receive a certificate of
competence to drive CCBSA vehicles.
S
erco has played a significant role in
helping to further the safety of truck
drivers at Coca-Cola Beverages
South Africa (CCBSA) by building two
specialised Protec steel trailers to house
vehicle simulators.
CCBSA invests heavily in the safety of
their drivers as well as road users in general
and conducts training at a variety of sites
around South Africa. Their idea was to
create mobile training centres prompting
the order being awarded to Serco for the
custom-built trailers.
Serco built the two high-tech Protec
steel trailers at its Johannesburg factory
to house the mobile training centres and
simulator equipment as well as provide
capacity to add additional features or
accessories as required by the customer.
The trailer interiors were configured
to provide space for the simulators,
computer rooms, air-conditioning units,
aluminium access steps with hand rails,
and tail lifts.
Although the mobile centres will be
used specifically for the training of truck
drivers there is potential – using different
One of the vehicles built by Serco for Coca-Cola.
Clinton Holcroft, managing director of
Serco says: “Road safety is a critical
component for any logistics company,
particularly when lives are at stake, and
[considering] the significant impact
accidents can have on the bottom line.”
“Serco is proud to have been
chosen to build the vehicle bodies for
CCBSA’s new training simulators,” says
Holcroft. CLA
Innovation Award launched to
celebrate cold chain excellence
ool Logistics Resources (CLR)
will launch the Cool Logistics
‘Innovation in Perishable
Logistics’ Award at the 11th Cool
Logistics Global Conference in
Valencia, from 17—19 September 2019.
Entries are open to anyone involved in
perishable logistics.
The Cool Logistics Global Conference
has continually offered a platform to
new products and services to share
innovative ideas, and to continue
this we would like to recognise the
companies and individuals behind
them for their contributions to achieving
supply chain excellence involved in the
professional handling of temperature-
controlled products.
Over the last 10 years, CLR has brought
together a wealth of talent intent on
stamping their mark on developing
perishable supply chains e.g., in 2017
George Ribeiro’s ‘1% waste reduction
target in the cold chain’; in 2015 the
official launch of Maersk Lines’ real-time
remote monitoring implementation
strategy together with AT&T Mobile and
Business Solutions; and in 2013, the launch
of the Stena Reefer RoRo concept.
The award is open to anyone involved
in perishable logistics — individuals,
teams, companies — who have made a
difference in the way perishable products
are shipped or handled. Award entrants
are required to show that a product,
idea, solution, process, scheme or other
innovation has resulted in significant
contribution to improving the efficiency
and sustainability of the perishables
supply chain.
The winner of the award will be selected
by an international panel of stakeholders
with an interest in furthering perishable
supply chain excellence and presented
by the Port of Valencia (Spain) on 18
September 2019 during the 11th Cool
Logistics Global Conference and Exhibition.
The Cool Logistics ‘Innovation in
Perishable Logistics’ Award is kindly
sponsored by Martico, a leading freight
forwarder.
Cool Logistics Global, the annual
conference and exhibition for perishables
shipping and logistics people, will seek
COLD LINK AFRICA • June 2019
once more to tackle the most important
issues facing the global cold chain industry.
Bringing key executives together for a high-
level debate, the technology workshop
on 17 September is followed by a two-day
conference on 18 —19 September. The
exhibition will highlight latest services and
technologies for shippers of temperature-
controlled cargos. CLA
