Although I will no longer be actively involved as the editor, I will remain a member of the close-knit Interact Media Defined (IMD) team as consulting editor and continue to enjoy their camaraderie. Working with the IMD team during the past three years has been an interesting and at times, a very challenging experience. Changing from a one-man operation as publisher / editor / owner / advertising salesman / journalist / photographer / production manager / proofreader and circulation manager to a publishing house with a large number of staff, each focused on a specific function, was a steep learning curve. With the change, although there were many functions that I no longer had to take care of personally, much stricter deadlines had to be adhered to, each with elevated levels of pressure. Sadly, I had to acknowledge that when publishing many trade publications, strict deadlines are essential to keep the many advertisers satisfied. After just short of 31 years of being the editor of The Cold Link and recently Cold Link Africa, it will be some time before I will come to realise that a large part of my daily life will pleasantly need readjustment. As editor for many years, I have established contacts with scores of interesting people, visited sites across the globe, and had most enjoyable experiences at conferences and trade shows. To all the friends in the industry, I express my deep indebtedness for what you have added to a treasurer of happy memories. It has been a humbling experience and with the blessing of good health, one that I will long continue to cherish. FRIGAIR 2018 is upon us and may it bring the industry together as a united forum to add to the economy and well-being of all the people of Africa. FRIGAIR — with its many exhibitors, the SAIRAC breakfast, talks, ASHRAE workshops, company side events, the offering of prizes, entertainment, and the showcase of products and services — is set to be a vibrant meeting place. To the many companies and service providers that have invested heavily in exhibits and stands, may the order intake be rewarding. Trade shows are meant to be far more than a showcase: it is a key event in securing orders and contracts, backed with professionalism and integrity. I hope to meet many of you at FRIGAIR 2018 and may the three days at Gallagher also uplift the image of SAIRAC. The severe drought in the Cape is beginning to impact heavily across the economy. The harvest of wine-making grapes is reported to be down by 30%. At first it may seem to impact merely on the leisure part of life, but there is a knock-on effect on jobs, suppliers, transporters, in fact the entire economy. Air conditioning and refrigeration systems free of the use of water, low global warming refrigerants, and energy efficiency, will be a common theme across many of the exhibits at FRIGAIR. The ATMOsphere round-table debate and forum on Thursday, 7 June from 14:30 to 19:00, will address all issues around natural refrigerants and is certainly a must for those wanting to gain insight into the latest international developments. Registration for the HPMP roadshows to be held from 6 to 12 June in Midrand, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town is gaining momentum, and readers are encouraged to register to assist the organisers in the planning of this long- awaited event, to learn more about the phasing down of refrigerants and available alternatives. The head office of the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) in the USA has announced the appointment of a full-time representative in South Africa to manage their aid project in southern Africa and to forge a closer collaboration with its members in the region. SARDA has had a long association with the International Asso ciation of Refrigerated Warehouses (IARW), a member of the GCCA, and COLD LINK AFRICA • June 2018 welcomes the news of a resident representative, as this could stimulate a closer working relation and mitigate formalised training in cold store and cold chain management. To the many supportive and encouraging readers since September 1987, my heartfelt thanks and farewell, until we meet on my travels in the industry.
