In2Food opts for industrial transcritical CO 2 solution

By Ilana Koegelenberg

Watch this space before the new world-class processing facility currently underway for In2Food in Boksburg boasts the largest CO 2 transcritical installation in the southern hemisphere: an impressive 2.75MW!

In2Food supplies a broad range of products to a few, carefully selected highend retailers and wholesalers globally, their main client being Woolworths. They supply the majority of processed foods found on Woolworths’ s shelves— from soups to prepared foods.
In2Food has an existing facility in Boksburg, just off Atlas Road, but the new facility will allow them to expand their operation and have a more efficient,‘ greener’ building. Once complete, the new processing facility will be 15 250m 2 in size. It will include various areas, like a meat and vegetable processing section, and requires a variety of blast chilling and freezers with meat freezers.

Commercial Refrigeration Services( CRS) got compressed air misting system. CRS will install the order at the end of 2017 and is supplying four CO 2 packs— two booster packs and a CO 2 refrigeration solution, a chilled water two transcritical medium-temperature solution, as well as a heating solution and a CO 2 packs.
“ In2Food is delighted to have collaborated with CRS on refrigeration for our new facility. This is our second system supplied by CRS. The environmental impact and green credentials were key considerations when selecting a supplier of our refrigeration system,” said Tim Groucott, general manager at In2Food Gauteng.
The CO 2 system supplied by CRS includes a heat recovery system that will deliver 18 000l of free recovered hot water per hour. The system has much lighter pipework and has a considerably smaller footprint than other refrigeration systems, allowing the client to reduce costs elsewhere in the building. The building schedule is quite tight with handover planned for September this year already. So, watch this space!
This will be the largest industrial CO 2 installation in the country, but not the largest one that CRS is busy with to date. They are currently busy with a 4MW transcritical plant in the US in California. CLA
