In memory of Stewart Mason :

Stewart Mason will be well-known to

those in the refrigeration industry in
Cape Town . It was a sad loss to hear
of his passing in hospital of a heart attack ,
the guy was a legend and I thought he
would last forever .
Like me , he did his apprenticeship at
L Sterne & Co Ltd in Glasgow in the 60 ’ s .
That was a different world then and so
much has changed , but Stewart ’ s love
for the Ammonia industry has never
waned . After leaving Sterne ’ s he worked
at Milne Cold Store in Scotland and was
singled out to take over the engineering operation but decided to head out to a warmer climate arriving in South Africa in the early 70s to work at Grenco in Cape Town . It was quite a surprise to me when we reconnected in 1974 when I joined Grenco as well .
I will never forget my first braai was with Stewart and his family . I rocked up with my two sausages and a few chops only to be confronted with what looked like half a cow . I asked Stewart who else was coming to be told just us . To which I
replied , “ Who ’ s going to eat all this food ?” He replied that we would be , and we did . This was just so typical of the generosity of the man .
He eventually joined me at Coldpak along with his son Paul . Yeah , we had some good times together . Stewart was always a worker , working right up until lock down for Premier Fishing – that ’ s 60 years and quite a record . I will sorely miss his easy laugh and Scottish outlook on the world . Rest well old friend , my condolences go out to Ann , Paul and the rest of the family . CLA
