Cooling in 2021 : Emerson plans to open new Transcritical CO 2 test lab
In 2021 , U . S . component manufacturer Emerson will complete the construction of a new Transcritical
CO 2
( R744 ) test lab at its main campus in Sidney , Ohio , US . This will be Emerson ’ s second
CO 2 research and development facility , following its Helix Innovation Center in Dayton , Ohio , which opened in 2016 .
The Helix Innovation Center , a 40 000-square-foot facility located on the University of Dayton campus in Dayton , Ohio , focused on providing a collaborative environment for researchers , academia , and industry professionals to develop solutions to industry challenges .
The Helix Innovation Centre includes a supermarket refrigeration and light commercial building section . The retail experience for supermarkets is designed to simulate supermarket and convenience store environments and includes refrigeration , dry goods , lighting , HVAC , heat reclamation and point of sale terminals . It also features 20 % — 90 % humidity control of space , a separate chiller rooftop unit , outdoor condensing units located in environment chamber .
The Helix Innovation Center itself is the light commercial component of Emerson ' s research , featuring a multizone 50T rooftop unit , facility controls and VRF systems for ambient temperature control . Features Include separate 20T RTU for the hallway , VRF system for ideation and team studios , instrumented and monitored at a control station , testing environments for initiatives and an industrial refrigeration system to test the

application of natural refrigerants and heat reclamation .
“ Emerson will continue to invest heavily in the research and development of natural refrigerant technologies ,” said Andre Patenaude , Emerson ’ s Director of Solutions Integration , in an interview with this website about Emerson ’ s plans in 2021 . “ These labs are designed to accelerate product development , collaborate with OEM partners and end-user customers , and help deliver simplified CO 2 solutions for the industry ,” he added .
“ Emerson will also continue to develop compression technologies , controls and valves for CO 2 in commercial refrigeration ”, Patenaude said . Among these solutions is a new CO 2 rack supervisor and facility management controller for Transcritical
CO 2 booster systems . Built with native applications , this system helps to not only manage standard system operation requirements , but also address highambient strategies , while providing enhanced integration with Emerson ’ s CO2 case controls , Patenaude said .
“ On the industrial side of things , we will continue investing in the development of CO 2 compressors , including a new heat pump CO 2 compressor ,” he added . CLA
