Here’s to an even better year that reaps what you have put into the industry. And I must say it is quite substantial. Meeting with some of you and exchanging ideas; including future projections, one can tell by the feedback I get how invested many of you are. Afterall, the industry is very technical and understanding the little bits and pieces that make it run like a well-oiled machine does require some serious academic backing. It’s good to see the proof in the pudding. Keep it up. Our very own John Ackermann, went sight seeing in Dubai and Germany, visiting various refrigerant cites that are cutting edge and pushing the natural refrigerant envelope forward. His educational findings can be found on pages 23 and 26 respectively. As much as we seek to keep up with standards and legislation, the terminology can sometimes get the better of us. This has caused some businesses to go into business rescue and eventually shut down. SARACCA deals with this pressing issue quite often, and although no tangible solution has been found, the association does provide resources that the industry can use to be better positioned to fight. COLD LINK AFRICA • January/February 2020 Companies operating in the refrigeration space are small and don’t always have the budget for lawyers to go through contracts and the like, we feature the last Part of Edwin Giesteira’s article (page 38) that explains how one should go about dealing with contract agreements. He also shares some nuggets of your rights and breaks down clearly what this means. I hope it has been as insightful to you as it has been to me. Do share your feedback – we’re ready to listen. International Associations are teaming up with other world organisations to ensure sustainability plans are carried out. This is commendable – not only are we saving the planet, but we are preserving the industry as well. Read more about some of these Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed on pages 29 and 11. The AHR Expo (page 9) and Chillventa (page 22) are making a comeback and aim to take the industry further, showcasing international industry trends, goals and achievements. To get industry insight on local trends, goals and achievements, FRIGAIR 2021 is the place to be. Exhibitors preparing for the show share their anticipation for it on page 28. Trading across continents and countries has been fairly discussed, and this edition looks at the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA) agreement. Over 20 countries have ratified the agreement. Researchers estimate that this could exponentially grow the continental GDP. It’s about time we started trading with one another – we haven’t even scratched the surface of the opportunities to be unravelled, but it does need to be done right. The World Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) are optimistic about the move, why shouldn’t we be? You can find the feature on page 33. It is no secret that the industry is innovative and often looks for ways to deliver better and greater applications, Kevin Walter from Lutz Refrigeration looks at installing an ice bank at an unconventional facility (page 31), while Kevin Schlemmer from CoolCheck unpacks the importance of measuring your refrigeration plant (page 36). With the adoption of natural refrigerants growing, the new year will likely be filled with more strategies that aim to make this happen. Yes, the refrigerants have been around for a while, the world and industry are taking the Montreal Protocol more seriously than it did a decade or so ago. With goals set in less than a decade, EDITOR’S COLUMN industry veterans are confident that these are achievable. The year is definitely starting off with a bang, so let’s keep up the momentum. Don’t forget to share your views, news and anything in between – after all, it is your magazine. CLA Dale Macnamara Business Unit Lead [email protected] www.coldlinkafrica.co.za 3
