COMMISSION 2 : RAC SERVICING TECHNICIANS
This commission was all about the
training of refrigeration and AC ( RAC )
technicians ( or as we call them , HVAC & R
technicians ), where the group covered
the topics of the importance of SAQCC
registration for all persons handling
refrigerants , informal service technicians ,
as well as looking at how TVET colleges
can bridge the gap between industry
and informal service technicians .
They also looked at the awareness
needs and challenges of HVAC & R
servicing technicians and possible
efforts and initiatives that can address
challenges within the HVAC & R informal
servicing sector .

COMMISSION 3 : REFRIGERANT RECOVERY , RECYCLING , AND RECLAMATION
Commission 3 looked at refrigerant
recovery , recycling , and reclamation ,
tackling the challenges and economic
viability of this . They spoke about the
recent study tour to Argentina and
Mexico with the purpose of seeing how
they use their reclamation units and the
lessons learnt . They also discussed the
trans-boundary movement of hazardous
waste and the MP .
The commission highlighted various
challenges , such as the lack of incentives
to drive recovery , recycling , and
reclamation . Other challenges include :
resistance to change ; the use of refillable

The following recommendations were
made :
• Collaboration / partnerships between
private and public sector is needed .
• Laws and compliance monitoring
efforts need to be ensured
for successful reclamation of
refrigerants .
• There is a need to have reclamation
machines in the other five provinces
in the near future .
• Need for destruction facilities in
South Africa .
• As learnt in Argentina and Mexico ,
for the viability of reclamation
projects , MOUs with refrigerant and
air-conditioning companies should
be ensured .
• Use of refillable cylinders will ensure

After Chauke ’ s presentation , Baloyi
officially closed off proceedings ,
thanking everyone for their participation .
“ It ’ s important that this is not just a
government thing going forward ,” he
said . “ This is a thing for everyone . It ’ s not
just an SA thing , it ’ s a global thing . Things
like the ozone is a world common . We
have to do our bit .”

technicians with no licence still operate

The agenda generally remained
the same for all four of the roadshows ,
but representatives delivering the
presentations varied from city to city , as
did some of the exhibitors who showed
their products at the events . The endgame
