COMMISSION 2 : RAC SERVICING TECHNICIANS
This commission was all about the
training of refrigeration and AC ( RAC )
technicians ( or as we call them , HVAC & R
technicians ), where the group covered
the topics of the importance of SAQCC
registration for all persons handling
refrigerants , informal service technicians ,
as well as looking at how TVET colleges
can bridge the gap between industry
and informal service technicians .
They also looked at the awareness
needs and challenges of HVAC & R
servicing technicians and possible
efforts and initiatives that can address
challenges within the HVAC & R informal
servicing sector .
COMMISSION 3 : REFRIGERANT RECOVERY , RECYCLING , AND RECLAMATION
Commission 3 looked at refrigerant
recovery , recycling , and reclamation ,
tackling the challenges and economic
viability of this . They spoke about the
recent study tour to Argentina and
Mexico with the purpose of seeing how
they use their reclamation units and the
lessons learnt . They also discussed the
trans-boundary movement of hazardous
waste and the MP .
The commission highlighted various
challenges , such as the lack of incentives
to drive recovery , recycling , and
reclamation . Other challenges include :
resistance to change ; the use of refillable

government thing going forward ,” he

The agenda generally remained
the same for all four of the roadshows ,
but representatives delivering the
presentations varied from city to city , as
did some of the exhibitors who showed
their products at the events . The endgame

Other challenges include the fact that there is only one accredited training institution in Cape Town and that across the board , HVAC & R student intakes have declined . There is a lack of training to enable competent HVAC & R engineering technicians and a disjoint between various levels of learning and training ( such as colleges versus universities versus technikons ).
It was agreed that there is a great problem with the current capabilities of TVET colleges to train the HVAC & R sector . “ We have to partner with government as industry to adopt TVET colleges and to show them how to do it , so they can go back and teach ,” was heard during the feedback session .
It was noted that there are a lot of companies with unregistered technicians , and complaints were raised that the renewal process of a technician ’ s registration is lengthy .
Cape Town
The Cape Town roadshow was also well attended .
