While many remember the tumultuous days
of the Vietnam war and the political and
social unrest it caused in this country - the
Vietnam of today has become a tourist
destination for countless Australians and
nationalities from around the world. Since the
socialist government opened the country to
tourism in 1995, western companies have
raced to set up headquarters in the political
capital Ha Noi, as well as the commercial
capital Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Sai Gon).
From the hustle and bustle of HCMC, to the
beauty of the limestone monoliths in Ha Long
Bay - the country has plenty to offer. Main
destinations on the “tourist route” are Sapa,
Ha Noi, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang and Hoi An,
Nha Trang, Da Lat and for the Vietnam war
connection - Nui Dat, Long Tan and Vung
Tau.
Accommodations range from inexpensive
to luxury, but at prices unheard of in this
country - and nearly every hotel has free
WI-FI!!! Food is cheap and delicious and the
local markets are a haven for those in search
of fresh produce. Getting around within the
country can be done with low-cost flights,
limited rail travel (mainly HCMC to Ha Noi)
and comfortable air-conditioned buses.
Even touring with private guide and driver is
affordable for many tourists.
Vietnam is reached in about 9 hours with
connection flights via Singapore, Bangkok,
Kuala Lumpur or non-stop Sydney. The “Visa
on Arrival” facilitates entry, can be set up
by your Travel Agent. ATM’s abound in the
country and a supply of US$1 notes is helpful for
tipping. Nearly everyone involved in tourism
and hospitality speaks English. For more
information on airfares, accommodation
and sightseeing packages, contact Travel
Direct of Kingscliff on (02) 6674-2577. Both
Trevor and Helen at the office have travelled
extensively in Vietnam.
