Windows 8.1 to be Released in October.
Windows 8.1 release this month marks almost a year to
the day when Microsoft unveiled Windows 8 with mixed
reception. This new version will hopefully ‘right’ some
of the ‘wrongs’ users felt with Windows 8. Axing of the
‘Start Button’ along with the unfamiliar melding of two
interfaces: ‘Touch’ interface (Start Screen with apps), and
‘Desktop’ interface (Windows 7-style desktop) being major
criticisms.

“Good news! The Start Button is back.” This should help
those who are familiar with the Windows 7- style desktop
interface. However, it’s not all good news. The ‘Start’
button only takes you to the Windows 8-style Start Screen.
You can opt to boot Windows 8.1 straight to the Windows
7-style desktop:
Go to the desktop > right-click on the Taskbar > click on
Properties > click on Navigation tab > Tick,
“Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign it” > click
Apply, then Okay.
‘Search’ has been a great feature in Windows. Searching
meant clicking the Start button and typing your search
term. The disappearance of the Start button from Windows
8 also meant the search tool had appeared too vanish. You
might think that the return of the Start button would also
mean the return of the handy search field it invoked in
previous versions of Windows. The bad news is it doesn’t.
The simplest way to search under Windows 8 and 8.1, is to
use: Windows Key + F for file search, and Windows Key + Q
for application search.
Shutting down Windows 8 was another baffling moment
in the use of Windows 8. Microsoft have made this a little
easier with Windows 8.1, and users can now right-click the
Start Button which produces a menu with a Shutdown PC
option.
Windows 8.1 is a free update for existing 8 users and will
be available in the Windows Store app on
17th October. Retail DVDs will launch on the 18t
