EDUCATION NEWS
HSC students
get career
head start
at TAFE
Over six hundred
Year
11
and
12 high school
students
from
Tweed and Byron
Shire have opted for a career head start
by commencing studies at North Coast
TAFE in areas such as construction, electro
technology, tourism, children services,
hairdressing, business, nursing and fitness.
North Coast TAFE TVET coordinator,
Natasha Rabjones, says that TAFE-delivered
Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
programs allows HSC students to gain
nationally
recognised
qualifications
that, not only contribute towards their
ATAR, but also provide pathways into
apprenticeships or university.
“During their time at TAFE, students will
experience an adult learning environment
providing them with skills and knowledge
valued by employers and gain insight into
careers they may like to pursue,” says Ms
Rabjones.
Kingscliff High School students, Ben Worgan
and Zak Payne, are both undertaking dual
qualification in fitness and sport training.
“I have a great interest in fitness and feel
these courses will give me an advantage
with job opportunities available within the
fitness industry,” says Zak.
“New TVET courses designed to engage
young people, such as surf lifesaving,
surfboard construction and interior design,
are added each year making the TVET
program even more popular,” explained
Ms Rabjones.
Students interested in studying a TVET
course should contact their school
career adviser or the North Coast TAFE
Customer Service Centre on 131 628 233.
