FERRARE AT NYU SYMPOSIUM
Dr. Joseph J. Ferrare, assistant
professor, was invited to participate in a
symposium in New York City titled, “The
Politics of Privatization in Education:
New Governance, New Policy Networks,
New Knowledge Brokers.” The
symposium was at New York University
April 12-14 and featured scholars from
around the world whose work examines
the intersections of public education and
the private sector in local, national and
international contexts.

Dr. John Thelin has been published
recently in The New York Times and
Money Magazine. He also served
on the Organization of American
Historians’ awards committee to select
the outstanding book of the year on
American political history since 1865.

JENSEN NAMED
ASSISTANT PROVOST
Dr. Jane Jensen has recently accepted
the position of assistant provost for
Transformative Learning in the UK
Division of Undergraduate Education.
The goal of Transformative Learning
is to provide academic preparation
programming and academic support
Jensen
for undergraduates in all colleges to
help them master the skills needed to
become successful lifelong learners. As
assistant provost, she will work with the UK Division of
Undergraduate Education and campus leadership to set
the strategic direction for Transformative Learning and to
ensure its units meet their goals and metrics.
Jensen brings substantial experience in higher education
policy and practice to her new role. A tenured faculty
member in the College of Education, her research interests
include qualitative research methodology as applied to the
studies of post-secondary education and development in
rural North America. Her publications include a text for
first-year college students, Piecing it Together: A Guide to
Student Academic Success.

BROWN BAG SERIES
In March, Michael Olneck, professor emeritus of
educational policy studies and sociology, University of
Wisconsin-Madison, visited the UK College of Education to
present a brown bag session titled, “Insurgent Credentials:
Digital Badges and Competency Education’s Challenge to
American Higher Education.”

The University of Kentucky Partnership Institute
for Math and Science Education Reform (PIMSER)
was recognized as a co-winner of the 2016 Dr.
Samuel Robinson Award by the Kentucky Board of
Education at the board’s February meeting. Receiving
