Drs. Molly Fisher and Cindy Jong, along with “research
experience for undergraduates” student collaborators, wrote
a manuscript on “Using Professional Noticing in Elementary
School Mathematics.” It was accepted to appear in Virginia
Mathematics Teacher in fall 2014. The team included
Flanery, B., Roark, R., Cummane, P Fisher, M.H., and Jong,
.,
C.
Dr. Brett Criswell and collaborators published a paper,
“Pushing for particulate level models of adiabatic and
isothermal processes in upper-level chemistry courses:
a qualitative study,” in the journal Chemistry Education
Research and Practice. Hernández, G. E., In addition to
Criswell, the team included Kirk, N. J., Sauder, D. G., &
Rushton, G. T.
A National Science Foundation grant for $500,000 was
awarded to Drs. Molly Fisher (PI) and Cindy Jong (co-PI)
to collaboratively research “Project TECHNO: TechnologyCentered Mathematical Noticing.” In addition to Fisher and
Jong, the research team includes: Thomas, J. (PI), Schack,
2
E.O. (PI), Gabbard, A. (Senior Personnel), Goodson-Espy, T
(Senior Personnel).
Drs. Jennifer Wilhelm, Rebecca McNall Krall and Molly
Fisher recently presented at the working Session for the
International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics
Education in Vancouver, British Columbia. The presentation,
“Teacher Noticing: A Hidden Skill of Teaching,” also
included Schack, E. O., Thomas, T.
The Evolving Schools, Evolving Workplaces summit
was held at Northeast Christian Church in Lexington in
August. Representatives from K-12 and higher education
and businesses participated in this event designed to create
a synergy of efforts focused on preparing students who are
more college and career ready. Carol Hanley, Eve Proffitt,
Esther Edwards, and Brett Criswell planned the event which
was attended by about 130 individuals from the different
stakeholder groups. Cindy Jong and Rebecca Krall from the
STEM Education department participated in this important
effort.
