AUXCHEF, established as a pilot program by D1SR COMO Dante Laurino in 2001 was so successful the program was officially established in 2009 as a National Auxiliary Program. In 2013, the program was renamed Auxiliary Food Service to resemble the policies and standards required of active duty Coast Guard Food Service personnel.

Today there are 68 certified AUXFS Specialists in D1SR and 579 nationwide. The Coast Guard often requests our support to fill in or free up at boat stations and on cutters, to prep and cook at various events and ceremonies. Here professional training is required and, in fact, demanded. It is also the most rewarding and enjoyable time for our Auxiliary FS members

AUXFS entered 2020 with optimism, and bright hopes for the year ahead until we were faced with Covid-19. Attempting to keep AUXFS Team engaged, members were asked to share recipes with each other. In April 2020, a special edition of the District publication "Over the Bow" was being developed and AUXFS was asked to share recipes with everyone in D1SR. As a result, “COASTIE'S DINER” was included in Over The Bow in the Summer and Fall editions.

AUXFS Specialists in D1SR have supported the Coast Guard at various events and celebrations. To name only a few, AUXFS members provided a total of 106 hours of service at the residence of USCG RADM Fagan at Station New York. Over 105 dignitaries including the Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard , and Interagency partners from the Maritime industry. We served at RADM Linda Fagan’s Ancient Trident Ceremony at the Alexander Hamilton Custom House In New York City.

Culinary Service at Sector New York, has invited AUXFS Specialists to attend their Culinary Symposiums. During these five-day events, our members have great opportunities to work with some of the most accomplished CSs as well as those in process of learning and moving up in ranks.

AUXFS served on the USCG Katherine Walker and USCG Sturgeon Bay underway and at the Port in Bayonne New Jersey. FS Specialists assist Culinary Specialists on Coast Guard Cutters such as the 'Richard Snyder' and 'Diligence'.
