The Future of These Lands is Conservation

In September 2025, everything changed. The Nature Conservancy of Canada purchased the 45,000 ha parcel – an area that makes up about a third of all private land in the Elk Valley.

This moment in time marks a powerful shift. After more than a century of intense industrial use and heavy timber harvest, the land now has a chance to heal. Wildlife, forests, and people who value this place can look forward to a healthier, more balanced future for this land.

The Coal Creek mine operated on the unceded territory of the Ktunaxa nation, without permission. At first the land was handed to the CNPCC for railway construction and later taken over by the federal government, with little regard for the people who had lived there since time

Look for the remains of the old wood water line, wrapped in wire cable, that transported potable water to Coal Creek residents.

NCC supports the Y2Y Conservation Area ensuring a North / South connected corridor for wide-ranging carnivores to make a better living and increase their breeding pool.
