Coaching Volleyball 2.0 CVB2.0 Special Issue 1 | Page 22
Is this school invested in me, or am I assuming ALL THE
RISK?
In women’s volleyball, you can receive a “full-ride
scholarship” or you are a recruited walk-on who is paying
for your college finances on your own. These can change
year-to-year or for your entire career. In men’s volleyball,
you are able to receive partial scholarships that can be
changed “year-to-year” pending on your National Letter of
Intent.
Here are some great questions that you should directly ask
the Coaching Staff, and pending on how they answer, you
will learn a lot about how they communicate. You will also
learn how prepared they are in the recruiting process.
What is my role for the team? How do I fit in, and why me?
Will the school overly recruit &bring in someone else in
my spot?
Will my scholarship change during my time? Am I on a
“1-year” agreement or do you have a 4-year or 5-year
plan for me to succeed in this program?
Through asking these direct questions, you are able to get a
view of where you stand in the Coach’s eyes.

When adversity hits and times get tough, how will they
support me at the University?
How will the Coaching Staff support you, even if you
never play a point?
If things are not going perfect, will they recruit someone
else to take my place and cut me?
If I need support in the classroom, how do they support
me? (tutors, mentors)
What type of mental health support do they offer?
What type of nutrition support do they offer?
Strength training & trainer support?
Sports Psych? Yoga? Recovery?
If you can say “YES” to a volleyball program based on how
the program handles their student-athletes when times get
difficult, then you know that things will be even better
through the times when things are great.
The ones who are able to enjoy the recruiting process are the
ones who have NO STRESS. They are the ones who do the
research, create their checklist, and enjoy the ride to finding
their future home!
