Rugby League is one of those sports
that never stops in the community,
whether it's developing the primary
game or visiting a clubhouse for an
awards evening. This edition
highlights some of the great work
happening right now.
The funding that enables Shaun
and the Wolves to engage with so
many schools and organise festivals
comes from Sky Try. Earlier this year,
the RFL agreed a seven-year
funding partnership with Sky to
support grassroots development of
Rugby League. One of the objectives
is to make a difference and intends
to reach 100,000 people every year.
The Embed The Pathway team is
working tirelessly up and down the
country with coaches dealing with 12
to 14-year-olds. Armed with training
packs and offering practical sessions,
the ETP team is making sure more
players are getting more opportunities
to demonstrate their potential.
A big part of the ETP programme
focuses on the 'coachability' of a
player and how they follow
instructions. RFL National Player
Development Manager Tony Fretwell
considers the factors to look out for
on pages 4-5.
It's always good to see Rugby League
players stay in the game. Some
choose to go into coaching and others
like to work behind the scenes.
Former England and Super League
player Shaun Briscoe has carried his
usual committed attitude from the
field to his role with Warrington
Wolves Charitable Foundation.
The team at Warrington is close-knit
and Shaun is enjoying engaging with
the schools and clubs in the area. To
The programme also offers valuable
experiences to those outside of the
Rugby League heartlands such as
the North East, which has embraced
the sport with open arms.
Magic Weekend was a major
success in Newcastle recording the
highest attendance to date for the
event. It wasn't just about the 12
Super League clubs playing over the
weekend though. Lots of engaging
activities happened before the main
event involving local schools and
clubs in the area resulting in over
300 school children taking part in
Sky Try sessions on the St James'
Park pitch. It was a fantastic
opportunity and one we’re sure
those children will never forget.
As you can see, Coaching Matters
covers the hot topics in Rugby
League and aims to help and assist
coaches around the country.
We hope you enjoy this edition.
