Blue Ball Batting I believe the basics of batting always need to be there, regardless of the type of cricket. The question is just one of focus. We’ve got to encourage the instinct to score runs – to hit the ball not block the ball. To put the bowler under pressure. Focus on our confidence against short, fast bowling. That helps in all formats, and the confidence against short bowling helps with your confidence against the full ball too. Then also focus on confidence against spin, and heavy spin at that, growing their belief in their footwork. With both of those aspects we also look at power and placement. And that will help players at all levels, across all forms of cricket. Always keep in mind the fun element though, especially for young players coming through. For example I like using boxing as a warm-up, as it trains reflexes and the same basic stance and movements are required. Balance weight distribution is key for both batting and boxing, getting the most out of your lower half. But I also use boxing as part of my way to keep it fun. It’s something different, a change of approach for the player, and is great at building the trunk and at getting the waist moving in the right way, especially for square shots. With these practices, first against short bowling then against spin, I’m thinking about technique and confidence, yes, but I’m also thinking about how much the batter will enjoy it. 35
