advantage of the natural lighting coming from the windows to fall directly onto the subject without much consideration of over exposure. “That made it easy to take advantage of the look of open white room inside the studio and really make Jenifer ‘pop’ out of the space, but always being careful to make sure that the window lighting was still falling onto her face at any time.” When it came to the outdoor photos, Feelings says, “We were blessed with a slightly overcast day which meant that there was a pleasing, even light across the sky and in our environment, so we had our choice of locations in the area all with beautiful soft lighting.” In this environment he wanted to utilize as many different textures to complement her look as much as possible. So aside from the change in the model’s outfits, he and Lynn utilized the stairs, the walls, texture of the gates as well as the brick walls to give different colors, tones and feels to the photographs. “In all of the photos I still utilized the shallow depth of field approach to make the subject standout from the environment,” he said, adding that he was again able to use (as mentioned before) “different perspectives” -- this time, however, by shooting not only up at the subject but by elevating his position on the stairs and capturing the model down below. “Without the ideal lighting I would have had to find more shaded areas or brought in an assistant where I could utilize reflectors, which are tools that photographers use that can be used to defuse the sun,” he said. “Angles are important in giving off a different feel. “For most of the photographs I used my 85mm lens, however for some of the outdoor photos I decided to use my 200mm 2.8 prime lens. A lens with longer focal length or millimeters (200 or higher) tends to not only bring the subject closer to you but also will ‘compress’ the background where the background begins to appear closer as well while still largely out of focus.
