advantage of the natural lighting coming from the
windows to fall directly onto the subject without much
consideration of over exposure.
“That made it easy to take advantage of the look of
open white room inside the studio and really make
Jenifer ‘pop’ out of the space, but always being
careful to make sure that the window lighting was
still falling onto her face at any time.”
When it came to the outdoor photos, Feelings says,
“We were blessed with a slightly overcast day which
meant that there was a pleasing, even light across
the sky and in our environment, so we had our choice
of locations in the area all with beautiful soft lighting.”
In this environment he wanted to utilize as many
different textures to complement her look as much
as possible. So aside from the change in the model’s
outfits, he and Lynn utilized the stairs, the walls,
texture of the gates as well as the brick walls to give
different colors, tones and feels to the photographs.
“In all of the photos I still utilized the shallow depth of
field approach to make the subject standout from the
environment,” he said, adding that he was again able
to use (as mentioned before) “different perspectives”
-- this time, however, by shooting not only up at the
subject but by elevating his position on the stairs and
capturing the model down below.
“Without the ideal lighting I would have had to
find more shaded areas or brought in an assistant
where I could utilize reflectors, which are tools that
photographers use that can be used to defuse the
sun,” he said. “Angles are important in giving off a
different feel.
“For most of the photographs I used my 85mm lens,
however for some of the outdoor photos I decided
to use my 200mm 2.8 prime lens. A lens with longer
focal length or millimeters (200 or higher) tends to
not only bring the subject closer to you but also will
‘compress’ the background where the background
begins to appear closer as well while still largely out
of focus. This worked well on the photos of Jenifer on
the brick wall.

What would he have done if he were not provided
with the ideal outdoor setting? Go to Plan B.
This would be the place holder for the caption.
