volunteer work
If you spend time giving to your community, don’t forget to include those experiences
on your resume. Volunteering can be a great way to build your professional network
and explore possible career fields. More than 60 percent of hiring managers say they
count volunteer work as relevant experience. Get involved with the Mary Ellen Brandell
Volunteer Center on campus by visiting volunteer.cmich.edu.
research
Assisting faculty with research projects is a great way to gain practical experience,
especially if you are going into a scientific field or wish to continue your education
in graduate school. Research projects often lead to publishing and presentation
opportunities as well.
internships
You are strongly encouraged to become involved in internship opportunities, even if your degree does not
require it. Internships are designed to provide relevant, hands-on experiences with organizations and will
give you opportunities to build relationships with others in your field as well. Many employers also use their
past and current interns as a first step in the recruitment process to fill full-time positions. It is common to
have two or more internships.
Although not all internships will allow for credit, you are encouraged to pursue credit for them by talking
with a faculty member who can assist with application eligibility, number of credit hours, and grading
requirements.
