Ida Ruth Doty,
Resident of the Month
Ruth was born in Ambridge, Pa., to
Ralph and Elizabeth Jackson. Her father
was a steel mill worker and her mother
stayed at home to raise their seven children.
Ruth had a twin sister. According to Ruth,
she could always sense what her sister was
feeling. Because of hardships they had
endured, Ruth’s childhood was a difficult one.
Growing up, Ruth and her family moved
around a lot. As a child, Ruth lived in
Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Oklahoma. Often times, they would find themselves living with their grandparents and

other family members.
Although she endured many tough times, she will remembers how much fun she
had shopping and exploring the caves in Eureka Springs. “One time, while walking
along the street with my sister, I remember seeing a dollar bill lying on the street. My
sister ran and snatched it up,” Ruth recalled with a smile. “It made her feel really
lucky, so she spent it on gum balls.”
Eventually, Ruth would marry Ronald Doty. The couple were blessed with three
children: Jon, J’mie, and J’sun. Ruth lived in Oklahoma until the passing of her
mother. To honor the memory of her mother, Ruth wrote the following poem:
Mother
Though she was old; bed ridden and sick
I would have no other. God knows I loved her;
And to this day I cry. I remember the day
We said good-bye, sun shone wherever she went.
When I was little; she was heaven sent.
We said good-bye. God knows I love her,
Cause Heavenly Father knows she was my mother.
Throughout her life, Ruth has entered, and won, numerous contests for some of
her poems and other writings. She and a friend wrote the song Ballad of Joseph,
which went on to win second place in a local song writing contest.
Ruth has been a part of the CMHCF family since April 2015. She enjoys working jigsaw puzzles, collecting fossil rocks, crafting and playing BINGO.
Congratulations to Ruth on being chosen as CMHCF’s Resident of the Month for
September.
