Mamie White,
Resident of the Month
Mamie was born on May 31, 1923, in Kansas City,
Mo., to Lewis and Edna Guthery. Mamie, her four brothers
and two sisters grew up in St. Joseph, Mo. where they attended Central High School. Her first car was a 1934 Ford
Sedan, which she felt, “was a good car.”
In the early 1950s, she married her childhood neighbor,
Robert White. Mamie recalls one day, while watching him
do yard work from her front window, she told her mom,
“I’m going to marry that man.” Robert and Mamie were
blessed with four sons: Gary, who died in the line of duty
as a police officer at age 24, Kenny, who passed away from
cancer, Norman, who lives in Goodson, Mo., and Russell
Allen, who passed away as an infant.
Mamie White
Mamie has always been very active member in the church. In 1980, she started
the first food pantry at the Patee Park Baptist Church. It was the only one of its kind
in St. Joseph for many years. In the beginning, they fed about ten families. For more
than 20 years she ran the pantry and upon her retirement, the pantry was serving
more than 500 families each month. Because of her efforts, Mamie was recognized
and received several awards for her efforts. Mamie received numerous awards
including the National Humanitarian Award, the Outstanding Hunger Relief Partner
Agencies, the Hometown Hero’s award and the Service to Mankind Award. Giving
back and helping people in her community has always been a passion of Mamie’s.
Because of her generous heart, she is a legend in her community.
Mamie has been a part of the Citizens Memorial Healthcare Facility family since
November of 2014. She enjoys music and seeing her family every chance she gets.
Congratulations Mamie on being chosen the Resident of the Month.
