Richard Moore, Resident of the Month Albert “Richard” Moore was born July 31, 1924, in Cantril, Iowa, to Charles and Maude Moore. Richard is the youngest of four siblings, Wayne, Max, Howard and Norma. They have all passed away. Richard attended school in Cantril until his family moved to Buffa- lo, Missouri in 1936, where he graduated. His father and mother owned and operated a 240 acre crop and cattle farm in Buffalo. Two of his brothers were in the Navy so he voluntarily enlisted during WWII and traveled to the Philippines and all over the Pacific. He was a radio operator on ship and land while in the Navy and communicated with people all over the world using the International Morse Code. He could impressively type 40 words a minute in Morse code. Shortly after the end of World War II, Richard was riding around with two of his friends on the Bolivar square when he spotted a beautiful young lady named Gladys who was riding around with a couple of her friends and pulled them over. It was love at first sight. Gladys and Richard began dating that night. The couple only had seven dates before they were married in Buffalo in the house of the justice of the peace on April 20, 1946. They just celebrated 73 years of marriage this year. He said Gladys has always been the highlight of his life. They were blessed with two wonderful daughters, Shirley and Donna, two grandsons, Jeremy and Chad and four great-grandchildren. The family has gone on many wonderful trips all over the U.S. over the years including taking their daughters to college and making several visits to see them at col- lege in Wisconsin and Minnesota. They have also driven to Key West, Florida and even taken a ferry to Victoria, British Columbia. After the Navy, Richard, Gladys, his brother and sister-in-law opened a restaurant in Warsaw called the Palace Café where they served home cooked food for two years. Richard and his brother were the cooks and his sister-in-law and Gladys were the waitresses. Richard began his career in residential and commercial construction along with his brother. He worked in Kansas and Missouri and when work slowed down there, they moved to Denver, Colorado where they stayed for 31 years. He began working as a carpenter and reached the level of Master Carpenter. He then moved on to be a supervisor on many projects in Denver and Missouri. One of the last projects he had before leaving Denver was doing the finish work downtown on a 21 story building. He has also built several buildings around the Bolivar area including a motel on I-44 and Hwy 65 in Springfield, the first swimming pool at Southwest Baptist University and another building on the same campus. After retiring three different times from construction, he went to work for Killian Construc- tion in Springfield. He was the building inspector for the city of Bolivar and sold real estate. Richard & Gladys bought some property in Rondo, Missouri and built a house and a barn and had a small farm. Richard remembers taking a trip with his son-in-law and grandson, who was 6 or 7 at the time, up in the Colorado Mountains, deer hunting and fishing. They packed heavy backpacks and hiked to the perfect fishing spot. The three of them caught more fish than they could cook so they had to pack them in snowpack to bring them back. He said being together as a family has always been very important to them and they always enjoy their time together. Richard became part of our CMHCF family in March 2019. He said his favorite part about being here is the wonderful staff and residents. He said he loves to joke around with them and have a good time. He said of all of the places he has been, Missouri has the friendliest people he has ever met. Congratulations, Richard, on being chosen as CMHCF’s Resident of the Month!
