Roger Todd was born March 20 , 1962 , in Kansas City , Kansas , to Fern Collins and Steven Todd . Roger ’ s mother worked in factories and clothing companies and his father worked for an oil company . Roger has fond memories of rabbit , coon and possum hunting trips with his dad . Steven also played acoustic guitar and mandolin , and played lead guitar for Tommy Thompson in his country band , later turned gospel band . Roger learned his love of music from his father and enjoyed playing rhythm guitar in a band with him and his uncle . They played country , pop rock and rock music . He is the youngest to his two half-sisters and one half-brother , Linda , Sharon and Steve .
At a young age , Roger moved out in the country near Osceola , Missouri with his great-aunt and uncle , Russell and Rachel Ball where they raised cattle and chickens . Roger also attended school in Osceola . He was raised with his cousins and they spent many days and nights hiking , hunting and fishing around Truman Lake . They caught many catfish , perch , crappie , bluegill and bass . He also recalls buying old GTO ’ s , Impala ’ s , and Malibu ’ s with his cousins . They had so much fun fixing them up into hot rods and selling them .
When Roger was seventeen , he moved to Kansas City , Missouri with his mother , aunt and uncle . While there he attended private school in Northeast Kansas City . About a year later he moved back to Osceola and attended graduation with his friends .
Shortly after high school , Roger was drafted into the Navy and served five years . Several years later , he reenlisted . He suffered a heart attack and was honorably discharged . He also worked for various plastic companies who manufactured plastic bottles . He said he really enjoyed learning how to make them . Through the years , he also worked for Divine Lighting and Folger ’ s Coffee .
He loves to be around all kinds of animals including dogs , and had a sheep dog named Pup growing up . Roger and his dog were inseparable . One day he took Pup hunting and saw him stick his nose in the water of the lake that was bubbling . Pup then stuck his whole head under water . Roger was concerned about what was making all the bubbles and quickly found several muskrats circling in the water . Excitedly , he ran inside to grab a camera to snap some pictures of this memorable adventure .
Roger ’ s favorite hobbies through the years have been hunting , fishing , hiking in the woods , sight-seeing , and exploring caves . His favorite season is Spring because of the warmth , rain , clouds and thunder . He isn ’ t too fond of lightening , but loves to hear the thunder roar . He also enjoys listening to music from his favorite artists , Foreigner , Bad Company and ACDC .
Roger joined our CMHCF family in August 2017 and his favorite things about living at CMHCF are the good food , the cleanliness of the facility and all of the fun activities . He also feels that it is a good place to make friends . He enjoys playing bingo , going on van rides , attending music events , holiday parties and Men ’ s Lunch .
Congratulations Roger on being chosen as our resident of the month .
