Dorothy Wheeler
Resident of the Month
Dorothy Wheeler was born July 7, 1934, in a small-town
south of Harrison, Arkansas, to Charles and Alma Tram-
mell. Dorothy’s only sibling, Charles James, was born one
year and eight days after her birth. She called him “Bud”
because she couldn’t say Charles and, thereafter, he was
known as “Bud.” Everyone thought they were twins be-
cause they were so close in age to one another.
Dorothy’s father was a laborer and, her mother, a
homemaker, raised turkey and cattle with her dad.
Dorothy went to school through 3 rd grade in Gardner,
Kansas. In 4 th grade she attended a little country school
known as Burr Ridge in Stanley, Kansas. The family later
moved to Kansas City where her father found work in a de-
fense plant working on airplane parts.
Her Freshman and Sophomore year of High School was spent in Stanley, Kan-
sas. The family moved to Bolivar her Junior year and she met the love of her life and
her future husband that year. The couple didn’t begin dating until after graduation the
following year.
Bob Arnold Wheeler became her husband on April 28, 1959. They were only mar-
ried 12 days when Bob left for the Army.
During their first 2 years of marriage, the couple rented a house from her parents.
Then, they bought a “fixer upper” farm house and 40 acres of land. They later added
another 80 acres and began raising cattle which they did almost their entire married
life.
Dorothy was the secretary at Bolivar Elementary School for 17 years. She then
worked for Polk County Bank (now, Mid-Missouri Bank) in Bolivar for 27 years re-
tiring in 2000.
She and Bob traveled as often as possible. Bob was a huge NASCAR fan and they
went to several of the NASCAR tracks. After retirement, they spent the Winter
months in Texas.
Dorothy, Bob, her brother, Bud, his wife, Shirley, & their children drove to
McAlester, Oklahoma several times to the Oklahoma State Prison Rodeo. The pris-
oners were participants in the rodeo and also were spectators with a fence
between
them and the civilians.
Bob loved flying and had his own plane. Dorothy did not fly very often and pre-
ferred to stay on the ground.
Their life together was always fun and Dorothy says, “Marrying Bob was the high-
light of my life! He broadened my life.”
Dorothy loves to read and sew. She was a member of Berean Baptist Church in
Bolivar for 25 years before becoming a member of the First Baptist Church in Boli-
var. Dorothy joined our CMHCF family in November of 2019. She says her favorite
thing about living here is the staff. “They are so helpful and kind,” she said.
Congratulations, Dorothy on being chosen as CMHCF’s Resident of the Month!
